We observed 61 shift handovers across eleven sites before writing a line of code. The scheduling platform that came out of it is now used by 2,300 clinical staff.

Meridian shift roster on a ward tablet

The challenge

Meridian's scheduling tool was written for administrators and used by nurses. Those are different jobs with different clocks, and the software only understood one of them.

We sat in on 61 shift handovers across eleven sites before writing a line of code.

They spent two weeks telling us our brief was wrong, and they were right. The thing we ended up building is the thing we needed.

Our approach

Shift swaps were the whole game. In the old tool a swap took nine steps and a phone call; on the floor it took thirty seconds and a nod. We built for the nod.

Everything else — reporting, compliance, the administrator's view — was rebuilt around that primitive rather than the other way round. The scheduling engine is a constraint solver with an audit trail, because in a hospital "why am I on this shift" is a question with legal weight.
